We joined Talkmobile as a real-life customer to put their mobile network coverage, 4G speeds and other benefits to the test. Here are the results. SIM Sherpa is your trusty guide. Last updated: 15th October You get a nice, low price, unlimited minutes, texts and a decent amount of data in exchange.
Overall, we think basic users wanting a cheap and cheerful provider will be very happy on Talkmobile. The contents of this review are a combination of our expert industry knowledge and what we experienced during our test. But they are their own company and not related to TalkTalk. Talkmobile via Vodafone sit in an honourable second place after EE for 4G coverage, which is still great. But we think their 4G expansion has come at the cost of speed in rural areas. It would be a tough job to do an exhaustive test of a particular network's coverage, as signal strength varies from place to place.
But we did test our Talkmobile SIM in rural and urban areas. We were surprisingly able to get 4G even in deeply rural areas. Talkmobile's coverage is definitely impressive, but remember to check signal in your area before you buy. Calling signal on Talkmobile is broadcast on lower frequencies, which are generally better at getting indoors, but your indoor coverage will also depend on how far you are from the nearest mast. Between our Talkmobile vs Vodafone SIMs we found no evidence of a speed cap or difference of priority or bandwidth as is sometimes the case with operators that piggyback.
For our tests, we go to different areas using the same test phones to track differences between different networks. Our results were not so different from what specialist testers claim. But 30 - 48 Mbps was the typical speed. In more suburban areas, we were getting speeds of around 13 Mbps over 4G. Where 4G was available in more rural areas speeds went as low as Mbps. We can expect the same results for Talkmobile. On average, that makes for a really good data service on Talkmobile meaning you can comfortably stream ultra high definition videos without buffering for example.
Greater expansion of 4G into rural areas has come at the cost of speed outside of the cities, as range has been the priority over strength. Useful link: More about Talkmobile's 4G. Their lack of WiFi calling read our guide here and 4G calling is pretty poor, especially since Vodafone offer it.
The quality of the calls was also great in most cases. Overall, TalkMobile offers a good service at a very cheap rate using its Essentials tariff. As well as offering good value, they have decent customer service and fast number porting. While they are not the very cheapest network , they offer much better prices than the majority of their competitors. Both include mobile internet for only 25p per day with a fair use limit of 25 MB per day and both tariffs also provide half price calls and texts to other TalkMobile customers.
The Rewards tariff is quite interesting as, like the Vodafone Freebees offer, you get a bonus allowance every time you top up. These include free minutes, unlimited texts subject to a fair use policy of every 30 days or even included international minutes. Some rewards are better than other but, for example, if you really need effectively unlimited texts , they can prove to be great value.
However, unfortunately, the call charges are very expensive even for a regular mobile network let alone a virtual one. But does Talkmobile deliver in practice? Our Verdict. As noted above, Talkmobile has the same coverage as Vodafone. Given that Vodafone owns the network and offers 5G itself it would make sense for Talkmobile to offer it soon — unless Vodafone wants to keep this as a premium feature.
If and when Talkmobile does start offering 5G it will of course be in the same places as Vodafone, which means coverage in many towns and cities. Talkmobile tops out at standard 4G speeds, which are roughly 5 times faster than a standard 3G network.
Those are both behind EE but ahead of Three and O2. We don't store email addresses nor pass them onto any third party. Read full privacy policy. No thanks No and don't ask again! They have their own range of pay monthly phones here and you can also get a Vodafone phone contract via separate retailers:.
They source their own phones but work with Vodafone to sell you a contract for them on their network. Because they buy more phones than Vodafone themselves, they get better prices with manufacturers, which they pass onto you.
We include all the ways to join Vodafone in our phone comparison tool , so definitely give it a go if you want to join Vodafone on a phone contract. Useful link : Compare phone contracts with us. See range of models. Take a SIM only with Talkmobile, build up a good record of payment, take an upgrade and then build up more good credit. If you want a phone contract on Talkmobile immediately, you can get one if you join via a third party retailer. Fonehouse offer Talkmobile phone contracts for new customers, without having to upgrade from SIM only.
