The first series of these, written by Stephen Thraves, featured stories loosely based on the original books. They were issued in plastic wallets with accessories such as maps, dice and codebooks. The gamebooks were titled as follows:. These consisted of abridged versions of the original text, with additional text for the alternative story routes.
The books in this series were based on the first six original Famous Five books:. Most of comic books in the series are based on Famous Five books created by Claude Voilier.
Books were released by Hachette Livre. The first three of these volumes have also been released in English, under the name Famous Five. The titles included "Famous Five and the Golden Galleon" which featured a sunken ship that was laden with gold with the Five fending off villains seeking to make off with the gold, "Famous Five and the Treasure of the Templars", where it transpires that Kirrin Castle is actually a Templar Castle that houses their hidden treasure which the Five ultimately secure with the help of members of the order, and "Famous Five and the Inca God" which was set in an antiquities museum and dealt with the theft of an Incan fetish.
Each issue published a full length illustrative comic book story adapted from Famous 5 Novels. The series came to end in the s. Children's literature Mystery Adventure. In the book reviews on this site, one of the reviewers seems to have gone with the idea of Julian being 13 after the 'age freeze', but I always thought of him as much older.
Any opinions? Their apparent ages are situation-specific rather than fixed to some yearly time-line except in the last novels where they seem to grow up - a bit. Julian in book 3 'Five Run Away Together' could easily be over 20 as he struts about like some sort of Lord Kirrin with the Stick family. Many authors stop characters mostly children from aging to allow a series to continue.
For example, the Babysitters books by Anne M. Martin begin with a bunch of 12 year olds in the 7th grade. They quickly become 13 year olds in the 8th grade, but never age further despite various story lines set at Christmas, Valentine's Day, Summer holiday, Halloween and Christmas more than once each. If the kids in these books aged "correctly" they would be far too old to be doing whatever it was the books were based on very quickly!
April 19, — Tuba says: In most of the books aging is never mentioned. I think so that not only us but also the authors are confused about the characters ages.
In the first book of the series, it is established that he is the brother of Julian, Dick and Anne's father. Note - There is debate about whether Julian, Dick and Anne share George's surname of Kirrin as shown in Five on Finniston Farm , which would imply that their father was brother to Uncle Quentin, or whether their surname is Barnard as their mother is referred to as "Mrs Barnard" in Five Get into a Fix.
The series was produced by Don Leaver. The setting was contemporary that is, the series was set in One of its most memorable aspects was the theme tune. Intro song lyrics: Wherever there's adventure to be found Just a clue or a secret message bring the Famous Five around Whenever there's a mystery to be solved Up in the ruined castle or down in Smuggler's Top Chorus: We are the Famous Five Julian, Dick and Anne, George and Timmy the dog We are the Famous Five We're coming back to you, whenever there's time, time after time Ending song lyrics: Whatever awaits behind closed doors Strange noises in the cellar or the sound of creaky floors We'll never let a mystery pass us by Just leave a clue and leave the rest to the Famous Five Chorus: We are the Famous Five Julian, Dick and Anne, George and Timmy the dog We are the Famous Five We're coming back to you whenever there's time Coming back to you, time after time, after time Finnish punk rock band Widows of Helsinki made three different cover versions of the theme song, first one in early All the books apart from Five on a Treasure Island , Five Have a Mystery to Solve and Five Have Plenty of Fun were dramatised; the first two were excluded because the Children's Film Foundation still had the film and TV rights to the books see below , and the third because it could not fit in the production schedule.
Plans to make a third series which would have included this story plus new ones written purely for television were abandoned after the Blyton estate exercised its veto. Unlike the previous series, this was a period piece, set in , and also unlike the previous series it dramatised all the original books. Of the juvenile actors the best-known is probably Jemima Rooper, who played George. In this series, to fit in with modern changes to Blyton's books and the fact that "Fanny" now has other meanings, Aunt Fanny was known as Aunt Frances.
Video and DVD The series was released on video with reasonable regularity between and , many of which are still easy to find second-hand, although the sound and picture quality is not always what it could be.
